WebSphere Application Server 5.0 (WAS5)
has been released on November 2002. This major
release could now compete with BEA Weblogic
7.0 and SunONE 7.0 in J2EE
1.3 application servers challenge.
As usually, IBM has modified the commercial
packaging. Some IBM third products such as Edge
Server are now provided, a new Express edition
is available, the database repository has been
removed and both WSCP and XMLConfig have been
replaced by WSAdmin. The following matrix might
help to understand versions and editions matching

Websphere
Application Server (WAS) and Java 2 Enterprise
Edition (J2EE) are now mature. With Servlets
2.3, EJB 2.0, JMS 1.0, XML, JDBC, JCA, some
"best practices" and more than 2GB
RAM, you rely on WAS5 to run enterprise applications.
WSAD5 IDE should suit for developement. It includes
WAS4 and WAS5 test environment but you will
need 1GB RAM if you plan to use it daily.
